Converting simple raster images
into workable vector models is the process of GIS
Data conversion. The scanned paper maps are raster
images which, when digitized, get converted into vector
data used for various applications. The raster image
does not have any scale, direction or position in
space. The GIS operator scales the raster, rotates
it to North and digitizes it.
The
operator may capture features such as Right-of-Way,
Property lines, Property hooks, Utility lines as well
as water features such as Rivers, Lakes, Ponds etc.
There are a lot of text features to be added such
as Road & Property dimensions, Property numbers,
Road names, Utility names, River names etc. These
features are an important part of the map without
which the value of the map diminishes drastically.
Sometimes
there is a requirement of fitting the entire vector
data onto an Orthophoto where there is a lot of data
manipulation to fit it correctly. The main aim is
to fit the roads on the Orthophoto and match the property
fence lines as best as one can fit them.
